Senior UX Designer – Public Sector
Location: London (Hybrid)
Salary: Up to £75,000
Clearance: Must currently hold or have previously held SC clearance
Eligibility: Must have lived in the UK continuously for the past 5 years (no absences over 3 months)
The Opportunity
A leading digital consultancy is seeking a Senior UX Designer to lead the design of inclusive, accessible services for UK public sector users. You’ll work across the full service lifecycle: Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live—ensuring that user needs are at the heart of every decision.
This role offers the chance to shape large-scale digital experiences that meet government service standards, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-impact outcomes.
What You’ll Do
- Lead UX design across all phases of service delivery, from research to implementation
- Conduct user research, usability testing, journey mapping, and service blueprinting
- Create wireframes, flows, and high-fidelity prototypes to support design decisions
- Collaborate with service designers, analysts, developers, and stakeholders
- Facilitate co-design workshops, playback sessions, and internal critiques
- Ensure accessibility and usability best practices are embedded throughout
- Support GDS service assessments and advocate for user needs in governance
- Mentor junior designers and contribute to design standards and systems
What You’ll Bring
- 8+ years of experience in UX, interaction design, or digital product design
- Strong portfolio showcasing UX leadership across public-facing services
- Proven experience working to GDS standards in central or local government
- Proficiency in tools like Figma, Adobe CC, Miro, and prototyping platforms
- Solid understanding of accessibility (WCAG 2.2) and inclusive design
- Experience with Salesforce and familiarity with HTML/CSS for handoff
- Comfortable working in agile, cross-functional teams
- Knowledge of mobile-first design and platform-specific guidance (e.g., GOV.UK Design System, iOS HIG)
- Experience designing for vulnerable or underrepresented user groups
- Familiarity with public service KPIs and low-code platforms used in government
- Eligible for SC clearance (British citizen or equivalent, with 5 years continuous UK residency)
