Job Profile Summary

This position is centered on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. The role encompasses various Surgical Services responsibilities, including medical tasks related to the excision or incision of a patient’s body, such as interventional pain management and other procedures. Additionally, this position ensures a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgeries. It is a clinical technologist role requiring specialized knowledge or skills acquired through vocational education, training, and experience. This entry-level position typically requires minimal prior knowledge or experience and necessitates vocational or technical education. Work is routine, follows established procedures, and is closely supervised, with communication that requires little explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview

This entry-level Surgical Technician role operates under the supervision of the surgical team in the Operating Room, providing patient care throughout the perioperative experience. Responsibilities include assisting the surgeon during procedures by supplying the necessary instruments and maintaining and organizing operating room equipment. The position adheres to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital, working collaboratively with other services to ensure quality healthcare delivery.

Job DescriptionMinimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior employment as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility before July 1, 2013; OR completion of a surgical technology training program in the military; OR graduation from an accredited Surgical Tech Program.
  • 0 to less than 12 months of healthcare experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • New graduates from an accredited Surgical Tech Program must obtain credentialing within 12 months of graduation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional tasks may be assigned.

  • Operates professionally as a Surgical Technologist in various surgical procedures.
  • Maintains strict aseptic technique during setup, patient draping, and surgical procedures.
  • Scrubs in on surgical cases, organizes instrumentation for the surgeon, and participates in surgical counts.
  • Selects and prepares the necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical cases.
  • Performs related activities under the surgeon’s direction.
  • Conducts all counts with the circulating nurse in accordance with Operating Room policy.
  • Manages intraoperative medications following Operating Room policy.
  • Handles surgical specimens according to physician orders and hospital policy.
  • Follows procedures for the proper decontamination of instruments, equipment, and room turnover.
  • Assists in positioning, moving, and transporting patients as needed.
  • Reports equipment and supply issues to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead, or Clinical Nursing Director as necessary.
  • When not involved in surgical cases, assists with positioning, obtaining necessary items during surgery, and room turnover activities.
  • Engages in Operating Room activities related to quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness.
  • Stays informed about service-specific equipment to ensure safe and efficient use.
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with peers and colleagues to foster a positive work environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in semi-restricted and restricted areas of the Operating Room and other perioperative support areas.
  • Stands under hot surgical lights for extended periods.
  • Potential for muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment, as well as risks of shocks and burns from cautery units and autoclaves.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood, bodily fluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Ability to wear a protective lead apron for long durations and exposure to radioactivity, harmful anesthesia gases, and septic infections.
  • Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, equipment, and instruments.
  • Regular interactions with patients, physicians, and nursing staff in the Operating Room.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Advanced understanding of aseptic techniques and infection prevention practices.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Basic familiarity with computers, surgical equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients across the lifespan.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective interaction with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and other departments.
  • Demonstrates essential knowledge in all procedures related to their surgical specialty and possesses sufficient general knowledge to assist in other specialties as needed.

Pay Range: $36.00 – $43.49
